How many times have you sent a text message on your mobile phone or your tablet and with fat finger syndrome you’ve accidently misspelt a word and the message ends up with a totally different meaning to what you set out to say? Researchers from the University of St Andrews, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics and Montana Tech have been playing with all different keyboard styles to come up with the most optimized keyboard for mobile and tablet use, and they have come up with a solution, it’s the thumb only keyboard called KALQ. Rumors have it that this free Android app will become available after May 1st 2013.

5.0 Key Lime Pie is to be delayed

We always like the strange yet sweet names given to Android updates, but the latest update is rumored to be running behind schedule and will not be ready for release between May 14 -16th at Google’s I/O event.  The reasons cited for the delay is that with the already fragmented Android market, Google wanted to make sure that hardware makers had enough time to finish rolling out Android 4.2 Jelly Bean before this latest addition was introduced.  What we need to do, is sit back and wait for the announcements at Google I/O to see which Key Lime Pie devices are revealed for autumn release.

Hope you had fun reading the latest Android World news, we will always do our best to keep you updated on what is new and exciting in the mobile sphere.

Why Are Android Phones So Successful?

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

There is always going to be competition between different phone companies, Apple was, and to some point still is, considered to have the ‘wow’ factor. However, Android, especially Samsung Android phones, are taking over the market and there are some theories as to why this has occurred.

Android is successful because it’s so cheap

What? Well according to many in the industry, including Nicholas Carlson writing in Business Insider, the success of the Android phone is down to free handsets. Well, on one hand I can agree that Android, due to its free and open sourced coding programmes, apps can be made by those with little to no experience, I can’t agree to Android being successful only due to freehand sets. The Samsung Galaxy range is one smartphone within high-end smartphone that is not free and matches the pricing of Apple’s Iphones, yet it has still managed to sell over 40 million handsets worldwide. The Galaxy Note 2 sold 3 million units within the first 30 days of its release, therefore the argument that Android is successful due to free and cheap handsets, is simply ridiculous.

Android users don’t utilize all the smartphone tools

Nicholas Carlson goes on to say that Android smartphone users do not utilize their handset for its intended purpose and only have the handsets because they needed a new mobile phone and the Android was the simple, cheap answer. He also says that searching Google for free Android phones brings up many adverts for free phones, well couldn’t the same be said for Googling free iPhones?

Android users are more likely to use their laptops, or PCs to continue doing many of their online activities, whereas iPhone users, or more likely iPad users are more likely to use their iPads and forego their secondary device. Now, does this mean that Android users are not utilizing their smartphones, or use different devices at different times depending where they are?

Competition

The truth of the matter is, without the boom of Android, they smartphone industry would not have boomed in the way that it has in recent years. The latest Android smartphone, the Galaxy S4, is a league above all other phones currently on the market. Appreneurs (app entrepreneurs) are emerging, new businesses are being formed due to the open source technology that Android supports and I believe that the mobile world is a better place since the emergence of Android.
